My grandfather's workshop was a hub of activity. People would come from far and wide to commission their own personalized smoking pipes, each one a unique piece of art. I loved watching him work, his hands moving with precision and skill as he brought each piece of wood to life. As I sat on the floor that day, the smell of freshly cut wood filling the air, I couldn't help but feel a sense of pride in my grandfather's talent. He had taught me so much about craftsmanship and attention to detail, skills that I knew would stay with me for a lifetime. Even now, years later, whenever I see a beautifully crafted wooden object, I think back to those hot summer days in the village, watching my grandfather work his magic. His legacy lives on in every piece he created, and in the memories we shared together. I would normally only spend this time with uMkhulu if it was school holidays. During the year I would be in Queenstown were I went to school. Most of my school books had a lot of drawings in them as you can probably imagine. In the type of community that I grew up in kids would have an un planned schedule for different activities, for an example in summer we would make cars from wire and drive them around. In winter we would make weapons and traps to catch birds and ducks so we can have a perfect excuse to make fire. By the age of 16 I had already drawn in most of the school furniture in my class and during this time I was making the transition from Queenstown to Cape Town to increase my chances of receiving better education. Things only started shifting into creativity as a career during my gap year when I was working as a bar-man in Grandwest. While attending an urban well known party at the time known as the Kool Out Lounge I ran in some dude from Bloemfontein who was already a Graphic Designer and I had no idea there was such even a thing at the time. To cut the story short I left my job and enrolled at Cape Peninsula University for Graphic Design and added value to my drawing talent. Now I am getting to enjoy my casual drawings and still be able to work as a Graphic Designer to support my talent because we all know paint can be expensive sometimes.2013 - Main Designer for Live SA magazine.
